Role Overview
3 min
Key Strengths
- One-shot kill potential at any range
- Area denial and map control without firing
- Forces opponents to use utility to challenge
- Opening picks that create man-advantages
Key Weaknesses
- Extremely expensive ($4750) with high economic risk
- Vulnerable in close-range duels
- Slow rate of fire punishes missed shots
- Predictable positioning can be countered with utility
Positioning & Angles
4 min
Positioning is the single most important skill for an AWPer. Your goal is to hold angles where you have the advantage and reposition before enemies adapt.
Passive Angles
Hold deep angles far from the peek point. You see enemies first due to perspective advantage and have more time to react.
- Ideal for CT-side holds on bomb sites
- Allows easy fallback to secondary positions
- Harder for enemies to pre-aim your exact position
Off-Angles
Position yourself where enemies do not expect. Off-angles force opponents to adjust their crosshair, buying you extra reaction time.
- Stand slightly off common pre-aim spots
- Use elevated or crouched positions for surprise
- Rotate between off-angles each round
Peeking Techniques
4 min
Aggressive peeking with the AWP is high-risk, high-reward. Mastering different peek styles lets you take initiative instead of always playing reactively.
Shoulder Peek
Briefly expose your shoulder to bait a shot, then peek wide to punish the missed shot. Essential for gathering information safely.
Jiggle Peek
Rapidly strafe in and out of an angle to spot enemies without committing. Combine with quick-scoping for aggressive plays.
Wide Swing
Commit to a full wide peek to catch passive AWPers off-guard. Best used when you know the enemy is scoped into a tight angle.
Flick Shot
Scope in slightly off-target and flick to the enemy. Useful when peeking angles where the opponent could be in multiple spots.
CT-Side AWPing
4 min
CT-side AWPing is about patience and discipline. Your job is to get information, pick off an attacker, then rotate or reposition before the enemy trades you.
- Hold for the first pick, then fall back. Getting one kill and staying alive is far more valuable than going for a second kill and dying.
- Play off your teammates' utility. Ask for flashes and smokes that create favorable peek timings or cover your retreat.
- Rotate early when needed. If you hear a full execute on the other site, start rotating immediately. Your AWP is more valuable alive than holding an empty site.
- Save aggressively on eco rounds. Hiding to save the AWP for next round is often the right play when your team is on a force or eco.
Common CT AWP Spots by Map
| Map | Primary Spot | Secondary Spot |
|---|---|---|
Dust2 | Mid doors from CT spawn | A long from pit |
Mirage | Mid window / short | A site from ticket booth |
Inferno | Banana from site / coffins | Arch side from pit |
Nuke | Outside from silo / secret | Ramp from heaven |
T-Side AWPing
4 min
T-side AWPing is about creating space and getting opening picks. You are the spearhead that breaks open a site by removing a key defender.
Aggressive Opening Picks
- Push for the first pick in the opening 15 seconds
- Have your team flash for you to gain a timing advantage
- Target mid-control angles first to split the map
- Fall back immediately after the pick or missed shot
Passive T-Side Play
- Hold a lane to prevent CT pushes or rotations
- Use the AWP to lock down a choke and create map control
- Let riflers entry while you cover their flanks
- Late-round clutch potential with positional advantage
Economy Management
3 min
| Scenario | Decision | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
Team full buy, you have $5500+ | Buy AWP + kevlar | Standard AWP round with full armor |
Team forcing, you have $4750 | Consider rifle instead | A dead AWP on force is devastating economically |
You have AWP, team is on eco | Save the AWP | Hide and preserve the weapon for next round |
Teammate has better position | Drop AWP to them | The AWP should always go to the best position, not the best player |
Lost round but kept AWP | Play safe next round | Your saved AWP is a $4750 advantage, do not waste it |
Practice Drills
3 min
Consistent practice is non-negotiable for AWPers. Dedicate at least 20-30 minutes daily to these drills before jumping into competitive matches.
Flick Training
Use Aim Botz or Fast Aim/Reflex Training to practice flick shots. Start slow and increase speed as your accuracy improves. Aim for 70%+ hit rate.
Deathmatch (AWP Only)
Play community AWP deathmatch servers. Focus on quick-scoping and holding angles under pressure from multiple enemies.
Movement & Peeking
Practice counter-strafing into scoped shots on empty servers. Your movement accuracy determines your peeking effectiveness.
Positioning Review
Watch a pro AWPer demo (s1mple, ZywOo, m0NESY) and note their positions. Replicate these spots on empty servers.
