The IGL Mindset

Think Ahead

Always be 2-3 rounds ahead in your thinking. What will the enemy do if you win/lose this round? How will their economy look? What strategy counters their likely next move?

Stay Calm

Your team reflects your energy. If you panic or get frustrated, your team will too. Maintain composure even when losing and always sound confident in your calls.

Learn Continuously

Watch pro demos, analyze your own games, study opponent tendencies. The game is constantly evolving, and so must your strategies.

Master-Level Communication

Intermediate

The CLEAR Communication Framework

C

Concise

Use minimal words to convey maximum information. "Two A site, one lit" is better than "I saw two enemies on A site and one of them is damaged."

L

Location-Specific

Always include precise locations. "A site" is vague, "A site default behind boxes" is actionable.

E

Enemy Count

Always specify numbers. "Multiple enemies" means nothing, "3 B site, 2 lit" gives your team tactical information.

A

Actionable

Tell teammates what to do. "Rotate B now" or "Hold your angles" gives clear direction.

R

Relevant

Only communicate information that affects current round strategy. Save post-round discussion for after the round.

✅ Good IGL Comms

  • "Two A ramp, pushing together, both full HP"
  • "B clear, rotating A through Mid"
  • "Save weapons, let them plant"
  • "Flash out Palace in 3, 2, 1"
  • "Economy check: can everyone full buy?"

❌ Poor IGL Comms

  • "Some guys over there somewhere"
  • "Why did you peek that?!"
  • "This team is so lucky"
  • "I don't know what to do"
  • "Everyone do whatever"

Callout Categories & Priority System

These calls must be made immediately and clearly. Practice until they're automatic.

Enemy spotted with bomb

Critical

"Bomb spotted B site, at least 2 enemies"

Immediate threat that requires team rotation or retake preparation

Player down, trade opportunity

Critical

"John down Palace, enemy one-shot, peek now!"

Time-sensitive opportunity for revenge frag

Low time, need action

Critical

"20 seconds, execute A now, no time to wait"

Forces team into immediate action to avoid time running out

Eco/force buy decision

Critical

"Eco this round, full buy next - don't peek"

Economic strategy that entire team must follow

Advanced Communication Techniques

Professional-level communication strategies

Voice Tone & Pacing

  • Calm under pressure: Never sound panicked, even in clutch situations
  • Confident calls: Sound certain even when you're not 100% sure
  • Clear enunciation: Speak clearly, avoid mumbling or rushing words
  • Appropriate volume: Loud enough to be heard, not so loud you're yelling

Information Hierarchy

  • Lead with action: "Rotate B" comes before "because they're splitting"
  • Numbers first: "3 A site" is more important than weapon types
  • Location specificity: "Default" is better than "A site"
  • Time sensitivity: Urgent calls interrupt less urgent ones

Strategic Framework: The 5-Phase System

Phase 1: Pre-Round Planning (Freeze Time)

Key Decisions:

  • Buy/save/force decision and reasoning
  • Primary strategy and backup plan
  • Player role assignments for this round
  • Expected enemy setup and counter-strategy

Time Management:

  • Quick economy discussion (5 seconds)
  • Strategy call (10 seconds)
  • Position assignments (5 seconds)
  • Mental preparation (5 seconds)
Phase 2: Information Gathering (0-30 seconds)

What to Look For:

  • Enemy positioning and numbers
  • Utility usage patterns
  • Aggressive vs. passive setups
  • Economic indicators (weapon types)

Information Sources:

  • Direct enemy contact
  • Utility sounds and trajectories
  • Absence of expected activity
  • Pattern recognition from previous rounds
Phase 3: Decision Making (30-45 seconds)

The Critical Window: Based on gathered information, decide whether to execute original plan, adapt to new circumstances, or completely change strategy. Consider enemy positioning, your team's strengths, time remaining, and economic implications.

Phase 4: Execution (45-90 seconds)

Flawless Execution: Clear, decisive calls with perfect timing. Coordinate utility usage, manage player positioning, and maintain team focus. Be ready to make micro-adjustments but avoid changing the core strategy mid-execution.

Phase 5: Post-Plant/Retake Management

Endgame Excellence: Position players for optimal post-plant holds or coordinate effective retakes. Manage utility for maximum impact, communicate precise timing for peeks, and maintain composure under time pressure.

Map-Specific Strategic Principles

Key Strategic Elements

  • Mid Control: Essential for both teams - opens up entire map
  • A Site Splits: Palace + Ramp coordination is devastating
  • B Apps: High-risk, high-reward area that requires specific utility
  • Connector: Key rotation route that must be controlled

IGL Focus Points

  • Always have a plan for Mid control
  • Coordinate Palace/Ramp timing perfectly
  • Use utility to slow down B rushes
  • Watch for opponent rotation patterns

Player Psychology & Management

Player Archetypes

Star Player

The Confident Carry

Give them freedom and resources. Set up plays around their strengths. Don't micromanage - trust their individual skill.

Support Player

The Team Player

Clear instructions work best. They excel with specific roles and responsibilities. Acknowledge their contributions publicly.

Emotional Player

The Momentum Rider

Requires constant positive reinforcement. Quick to tilt but can carry when confident. Shield them from criticism during games.

Analytical Player
